In 1938 after a series of personal failures Canadian doctor Norman Bethune travels to China to save lives in the Anti-Japanese war in his last effort search for redemption. Bethune is forced to confront his own past in order to learn what his ‘great contribution to humanity’ will be. It is this final contribution that will make him a martyr for the Chinese people and the most famous foreigner in modern Chinese history.
